AU Background:
As a forward note, Koumaju Densetsu isn’t considered part of the canon timeline so it would fall under an AU.
This is basically really easy. Sometime after the game Undefined Fantastic Object, another red fog, similar to one that appeared in Gensokyo at a previous date, appeared and blocked out the sun. Reimu sends a message to Marisa so they both can investigate this together.
A short time later, Reimu stumbled upon a giant castle that appeared in Gensokyo but her way is barred by Cirno, the ice fairy. Marisa shows up just then and, in true Gensokyo style, they beat her up and then recruit her into the party.
After that, the group enter the castle, fighting a wide variety of foes, including Meiling (the gatekeeper), Sakuya (the maid), Alice (who claims she’s there for fun but really just has no friends), Suika (who is just chilling), and Patchouli (the librarian). At the very end, they encounter Remilia, who finally decides to tell everyone why she had a castle built and put a red mist across Gensokyo.
In short, she read in a book that a treasure will appear underneath a castle so she built one. But then she thought she’d need help so, to attract Reimu to the area, she created the red fog. It was as stupid as it sounds. Reimu and Marisa try to leave, stunned by the idiocy, but Remilia challenged them to a fight. So they duked it out and Reimu defeated everyone a second time.
Afterward, they all went to the shrine and had a big party. Yep.
Personality:
It should be stated that Reimu is the main character of Touhou and is in every game. Every single one. But Reimu started out a pretty blessed life. Born to a Hakurei Shrine Maiden, her parents are suddenly nowhere to be found so it's probably safe to assume that they're dead. Most of her life was most likely lived alone and most of what she knows about being a Shrine Maiden was either learned on her own or taught to her by Yukari, an eternally living friend of all Hakurei Shrine Maidens. Somewhere around her first incidents she attempted to solve, she became friends with Marisa Kirisame, a witch who seemed to join her. And thus began her life of generally chilling at the Shrine and beating up youkai who stepped beyond their bounds. Along the way, she made a few more friends and met some people she didn't mind spending time with.
Out of all the characters in the Touhou games, Reimu is most well known for treating everyone equally, regardless of who they are or what they are. Though, equally doesn’t mean she treats people well. She’s actually a bit brusque and slightly rude, commonly being indifferent to concerns of others but certain plights do gain her sympathy. Her equality, though, is what makes her endearing to others because she doesn’t antagonize youkai but neither does she consider herself superior to humans. Even though she gets along with nearly everyone except those who antagonize her frequently, she doesn’t have many friends, with Marisa and Yukari being the closest to her. Reimu does take her job of 'exterminating youkai' to pretty extreme levels, taking no sympathy on youkai who she thinks has taken part in wrong doing.
She also very carefree and wears her heart on her sleeve. This makes her a rather dangerous person since the majority of other characters are sly or are doing something behind their smiles. If Reimu smiles, she is genuinely happy and is genuinely mad when she scowls. But carefree also carries over into work. She’s a shrine maiden pretty much only in name. The only shrine maiden-like things she does is sit on a veranda and drink tea. Things like working for the betterment of others is simply not considered by her but she does follow most of the rules.
Speaking of working, Reimu doesn’t do it in any large amounts. She’s a firm believer in the fact that hard work does not bring off any better results than little work will do. This leaves her fairly low in skill level all across the board but, compared to some of her closer friends, is actually a bit better at melee combat than them. She doesn’t train or practice in any appreciable amount. She gained all the power she has through the innate talent she was born with, making her pretty good at almost anything she tries her hand at, cementing her belief that hard work won’t have any real gains. Also note that her abilities don’t let her gain weight so she doesn’t need to exercise off any big feasts and parties she might take part in.
At the appearance of incidents, however, Reimu is off her butt and using her intuition to solve the problem. She doesn’t do any detective work, preferring to rely on gut instinct, but she completes the tasks with enthusiasm you wouldn’t expect from her normal laziness. It’s unknown as to why she gets so much energy when these incidents roll around but one can assume one of three things and probably not be wrong. She does it to stave away boredom, try to actually get donations out of thankfulness (no one donates to her shrine), or to pick up any “spoils of war” to help fund her sedentary lifestyle. Outside of events and parties, she rarely leaves her shrine , leaving her a bit backwards in terms of some social concepts.
Reimu is also well known for being greedy and constantly poor. Since money doesn't come all that often to her shrine, she sometimes will go to extremes to get some. While those extremes will never involve lots of work, it may involve being unusually kind. It's usually pretty easy to spot when Reimu is getting low on money since she starts becoming less argumentative and more pliable to different ideas outside of her normal conservative lifestyle.
Abilities:
Reimu possesses quite a weird slurry of abilities. First among them is that she’s blessed by the gods. As such, nearly every task or ability she picks up, she’s almost instantly extremely good at it but not quite on master level. Along with that comes extreme good luck. Reimu can also invoke the power of the gods for extreme amounts of power, if required.
But Reimu’s main power is the ability to ‘float’. This gives her the power to fly but also is very broadly defined. Reimu can use that ability to float out of reality, making her invulnerable for periods of time. This technique is actually banned in Gensokyo because it’s too powerful and a time limit is slapped onto it according to Gensokyo rules.
She can also throw paper slips at an alarming pace, which essentially become bullets and are dangerous to anything they touch. Reimu has yin-yang orbs she can also use which are not only dangerous to supernatural beings but grant three useless powers to Reimu. They make it so she can’t gain weight, they can make Reimu smell however she wants to smell, and they can turn into a cat.
